During his weekly news conference Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said, “The disagreements between regional countries are a Zionist (Israeli) plot that authorities should be aware of.” He added that “the Islamic awakening” (as Iranian officials call the “Arab Spring”) in the region put the interests of the Zionist regime and especially the US at risk, so they naturally try to create disagreements between countries in the region.” He reaffirmed Iran’s stance on the disputed Gulf islands, saying, “These islands (Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb) have belonged to and will belong to Iran, and we will firmly protect our territorial integrity.” Mehmanparast expressed optimism that the upcoming second round of nuclear talks would be held in an environment of cooperation, goodwill and orientation toward the resolution of all issues to be discussed jointly. He dismissed pessimistic statements about the upcoming talks, saying,
Those predictions and opinions expressed by some people are mostly aimed at creating a certain atmosphere before the talks. We should not pay attention to them and should be oriented toward talks that will take place in Baghdad during this meeting.
