Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri, Deputy Joint Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, said in an interview to IRNA leading up to the NAM Summit in Tehran, “NAM has over 120 members and observer countries, and therefore this international body can play a beneficial role in strengthening global peace. Holding the NAM Summit in Tehran at a time when the Middle East and North Africa are facing an Islamic Awakening (Iran’s term for what the West refers to as the Arab Spring), events such as the Occupy Wall Street Movement in the US and popular protests in Europe are very significant.” He said that hosting the 16th NAM Summit in Iran is also of special importance, because Western countries, led by the US, are constantly spreading propaganda about Iran’s growing isolation in the global arena.
It can be assumed that Western media outlets will attempt to minimize the importance of this great event in Tehran, but the potential of the NAM will ensure that the Summit is closely followed by the international audience. With respect to the involvement of NAM member countries in protecting the interests of the developing nations, he said that while they have not yet taken any important and fundamental steps in this field, NAM has tremendous untapped potential. This explains the sharp criticism of NAM in this regard, and one of the reasons for this passivity may be the existence of governments and regimes that are not in line with the essence of NAM. In light of the ability of NAM, it can play an exceptionally important role in world peace and in the prevention of state-sponsored and other terrorism against repressed peoples.
The summit in Tehran may pave the way for reviving NAM and lead member countries to pay more attention to their responsibility for global events, particularly the extreme demands of the global imperialism and terrorism, leaded by world Zionism and the head of global capitalism.
