Iran-Azerbaijan relations excellent and friendly despite ups and downs over the past 20 years

Friday, 10 August 2012

Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs, said that that some, especially the Zionists, are trying to undermine Iran-Azerbaijan relations. Araqchi referred to Baku-Tel Aviv military deals and said that Iran has conveyed its concern regarding the deals to Azeri officials, but they provided assurances that their relations will never harm Iran. Araqchi added that Israel is seeking to gain a foothold in Azerbaijan in a bid to launch anti-Iran activities, but neither the Azeri people nor the government will allow it to do so. In response to another question that the terrorists who assassinated Iran’s nuclear scientists used Azeri territory, Araqchi said that the two countries’ intelligence services have regular meetings to discuss this and other issues. In response to the question of why the Azeris raise the issue of ‘greater Azerbaijan’ and go against the Iranians’ position, he recommended that all Iranian and Azeri officials and media adopt wise attitudes regarding the issues.
