IRIN Commander: Navy plans to stretch its operational range in northern waters Indian Ocean

Monday, 14 May 2012

After a meeting with Assistant Chief of Staff of Oman’s Armed Forces, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, the Commander of the IRN said that because of the Navy’s plan to increase its operational zone, interactions between Iran and the countries on the northern rim of the Indian Ocean would be expanded.

Given the expansion of the operational zone of the Iranian Navy in the Northern Indian Ocean and our plan for going to waters beyond 10° latitude, we need to have interaction and cooperation with the neighboring states, especially countries along the northern Indian Ocean.

He said that maintaining such a naval presence demands cooperation with the neighboring states, Oman in particular and noted that Muscat is one of the ports where Iran’s naval fleets dock for necessary tasks, like repair and maintenance. He said that Iran and Oman will hold joint rescue operations.
