IRIN wraps up Velayat 91 6-day naval drills

Rear Admiral Amir Rastegari, spokesman for the war games, said that “The great naval war game of Velayat 91, which started on December 28, covered approximately 1 million square kilometers and was conducted in the Strait of Hormuz, Sea of Oman, North Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. The Navy test fired various types of long-range missiles from the coast and navy vessels. Different types of short- and long-range coast-to-sea, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles were also tested by Iranian troops and vessels. Iranian submarines also launched smart torpedoes during the drills. The last phase of the drills was conducted on January 2, by redeploying vessels to their previous positions. Iranian Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, said that “The redeployment operation includes returning different classes of subsurface units, warships, destroyers, helicopters and aircraft that participated in the Velayat 91 war games…. As they are also in the operation, the Navy’s Special Forces and marines will return to their previous positions, where they were before the start of war games.”
