Syrian opposition group releases 48 Iranian pilgrims and translator

Thursday, 10 January 2013

Iranian hostages in Syria were freed thanks to mediation efforts made by a Turkish Non-Governmental Organization involved in humanitarian relief operations in Syria. Turkish officials maintained that Turkey and Qatar mediated a swamp of some 2,130 prisoners along with several Turkish nationals under arrest in Syria in return for the 48 Iranian hostages. Iranian Ambassador to Syria, Mohammad Reza Sheybani, said that “with the help of some internal parties in Syria and some regional parties, we were able to meet the demands (of the captors) and secure the release of the hostages.” He added that two Iranian engineers are still being held in Syria and that he hoped that they would be released soon. The 48 Iranian hostages were released in Syria and handed over to Iranian Embassy in Damascus.
