Iraqi Kurdistan PM makes secret visit to Iran

Friday, 11 January 2013

The Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan, Nechirvan Idris Barzani, announced at a press conference he held that he had been in Iran for a few hours and had discussed a number of important Iraq-related issues with senior officials in Tehran. He then flew back to Erbil in a private plane. A senior Iraqi official, who has asked not to be identified, told Asre Iran website that Barzani is not furthering the interests of either Iraq or Kurdistan, and that in fact he sympathizes with Turkey’s anti-Syrian policies. Asre Iran also reported that Barzani was unable to meet high-ranking officials during his secret visit, which he was also eventually forced to reveal due external pressures. The Iranian media has recently given extensive coverage to the involvement of Turkey and Israel in events in Iraqi Kurdistan.
