Senior cleric suggests electing president through parliamentary system

Tuesday, 15 January 2013

Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani suggested that the president be elected through a parliamentary system, instead of the current system in which the president is elected through the people’s direct vote. He explained that despite the fact that the current electoral system is in line with the Iranian Constitution, it has become a source of hostility, rather than rivalry, among the people, and this hostility could undermine national unity. He also added that a great deal of money is wasted during election campaigns.
