An editorial in Baztab by Hamid Kosshaki titled, “We’ve Lost Syria, Focus on Saving Iraq!” examines recent political events and protests in Iraq, claiming new events ahead of the April elections in Iraq will undoubtedly affect the security of its neighbors. Under these conditions, Iran, one of the major players in Iraq and a supporter of the Nouri Al-Maliki government, can before the political disputes exacerbate and political streams enter the coalition with militia forces, take the initiative and pressure the Iraqi Prime Minister to implement the proposal to open the political climate. A sharp political divide must not be allowed to occur in Iraqi society, making Iraq into a second Syria. There are signs of imminent events in Iraq, and we must analyze these signs realistically and formulate appropriate measures. If we ignore or deny reality, as we did when events began in Syria, we will be unable to resolve issues. If events in Iraq advance to a stage in which the political atmosphere is open to a partnership with the other groups in the regime is late to come, then insecurity will reign in the country and affect everyone’s safety. Under these circumstances, we must view Bashar Assad as a passing phase. Iraq traveling the same road as Syria means a serious decline in Iran’s influence in the region and negative impact on Iran’s national security.
“We’ve lost Syria, focus on saving Iraq!”; we need to see Assad as a passing phase
