Iran denies report that Iranian airplane exploded in Damascus

Friday, 29 March 2013

An unnamed official at the Iranian Embassy in Syria denied Al-Arabiya news reports that an Iranian aircraft carrying weapons to the Syrian regime had exploded at Damascus Airport. The Syrian government also issued a similar statement denying the report.
The inquiry made by the ISNA reporter from Imam Khomeini International Airport indicates that there have been no flights from Iran to Syria in the past two days. On March 28, the Syrian opposition claimed that that an Iranian airliner carrying weapons was hit by rebel fire over Damascus Airport and then landed in flames and crashed into a number of other planes on the tarmac. Al-Arabiya reported, “The Free Syrian Army targeted an Iranian cargo plane carrying arms as it arrived at Damascus Airport, causing it to explode and a fire to break out inside.”
