Chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Alaedeen Boroujerdi, announced that the date and venue of the next round of talks with the 5+1 would be decided soon. According to Boroujerdi, Ashton is scheduled to call Dr. Jalili shortly to announce their decision regarding the venue and date of the next round of talks. He addressed reports that recent talks were meaningless and claimed that these talks did have an effect and were considered a step forward. When asked by reporters whether Iran in Almaty 2 agreed to suspend Fordo operations for six months, Boroujerdi said that the Fordo issue has two key points. The first being that due to repeated threats by the regime’s enemies, particularly the Zionist regime, to attack the nuclear facilities, Iran must increase security at these facilities, and passive defense is therefore critical and will never stop. At the same time, Boroujerdi stressed that even if the government decides one day to shut Fordo down, the Majlis will oppose. Another issue in the talks is the 20% enriched uranium. In the future, a project might need higher enrichment. This is a temporary need that is not related to enrichment. This is an important point that Iran will never stop enrichment since it is its legal right according to the NPT. Iran will decide, based on its needs, whether it needs to enrich at 20% or more in the future. Suspension of enrichment at 20% was the West’s proposal and not Iran’s. They suggested that Iran shut down Fordo and halt enrichment at 20%, but we demanded that the illegal sanctions be lifted in return. He added that they have no other choice but to lift the sanctions. In this case, they can in return talk to us. Boroujerdi was asked whether a new president would change Iran’s position in the nuclear talks, and he responded by saying that the nuclear policy according to the regime’s standards was acceptable and there was no question that the governments will make no decision that counters this strategy. There is a Majlis decision in place that cannot be amended.
