Benin was Ahmadinejad’s first stop, and from there he went on to Niger, one of the world’s top producers of uranium, which Iran has long been seeking to acquire for its controversial nuclear program. Before leaving for his visit to three African countries, President Ahmadinejad discussed the goals of his trip with reporters and stressed the importance of developing Iranian ties with African nations. He also discussed the tremendous importance of cooperation with independent countries and the establishment of a front of independent nations to face the powerful and imperialistic countries. Ahmadinejad added that his trip to three African countries is at the invitation of the presidents of these nations, and numerous memoranda of understanding will be signed regarding development and investment in energy, commerce, culture, tourism, health, etc.
