Deputy Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Dr. Mohammad Qannadi, said at the Nuclear Technology: Threat and Opportunity conference at Sharif University that nuclear fission is the basis for nuclear technology, and without it, it would not have been possible to provide radio isotopes or to produce energy. He referred to the discovery of uranium reserves in the region of Saghand in Yazd, and said that a borehole 357 m deep and 4 m wide had been dug in the region to carry out a process of extracting uranium and feeding the fuel cycle to the reactor. He went on to refer to Iran’s achievements in nuclear technology and said that Iranis capable of producing UF6, maintaining it and using it to fuel the reactor. He added that upgrades and improvements are also being made in the IR40 reactor in Arak, and claimed that in addition to this, virtual fuel would also be produced.
