Ambassador to IAEA: IAEA, UNSC pressures and sanctions may push NPT signatories to leave treaty

Wednesday, 1 May 2013

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that pressure and sanctions imposed on member states that are signatories to  the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) by the IAEA and the UN could result in these states leaving the treaty. “Instruments, such as political pressure and sanctions, used by the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors and the United Nations Security Council against member states of the NPT may have serious consequences for the unity and integrity of the treaty, from (members’) disenchantment to leaving the treaty.”
