New Basij-based security establishment to be formed ahead of presidential elections

Wednesday, 1 May 2013

Esmail Ahmadi Moqaddam, Commander of the Law Enforcement Force (LEF), said that units of “honorary police troops” will be formed from among Basij militia members ahead of the 11th presidential elections, however, the new force would be wholly separate from the Basij. Ahmadi Moqaddam added that during the June 2009 elections police employed the help of other organizations in executing their law-enforcement functions and noted that using the Basij force was nothing new. He said that honorary police was not expected to take over all of the LEF’s responsibilities, and described it as a “collective power” that would cooperate with police in the training, information, cultural and other fields.
