Iran condemns UAE for calling football league “Arabian Gulf”

Thursday, 30 May 2013

Iranian officials and most Persian-speaking web users have strongly condemned the UAE for using a “fake” name for the Persian Gulf in its football league, calling the country’s premier football league the “Arabian Gulf League”. Iranian Sport Minister Mohammad Abbasi said, “If they have done such a thing, it is immoral and we condemn it, because the Persian Gulf has always been an undeniably shining point in the region, and Iran does not like its neighboring states to do such things, which may deepen divisions.” Foreign Ministry spokesman, Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, claimed that UAE’s move “is in contravention with the FIFA charter, and that football should not be used for political purposes, particularly in order to fabricate historical facts. The Iranian Football Federation will definitely pursue the case in FIFA.”
