Khatami warns that some candidates are close to Fitna

Thursday, 6 June 2013

During a speech at the anniversary commemorating the death of the founder of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyid Ahmad Khatami, a member of the Assembly of Experts – warned the Iranian people that some of the speeches of the candidates are very close to Fitna. He condemned criticism by a presidential candidate of the conduct of the IRIB during and after the Fitna 88 events [June 2009 presidential elections] and added that it is very unfortunate that some hopefuls are welcoming the leaders of the Fitna [the Green opposition leaders] with open arms. He advised the public to choose candidates who are consistent with the valuesof the Founder of the Revolution, and said that those who stray from the values of the Revolution and Ayatollah Khomeini are not worthy of the Iranian people. Khatami expressed regret that some of the candidates give a green light to relations of any kind with theUS and claim that the economic problems can be solved through relations with the West. He said, “They argue that if we improve ties with the West, our problems will be solved. Instead of encouraging faith in God, they are encouraging faith in the West. The West fears the Islamic Revolution, and its problem with Iran is not nuclear. It has a problem with our religion, and the nuclear issue is just an excuse for the West’s position on Iran and the Islamic Revolution.”
