Reports claim Saeed Jalili being pushed to withdraw from presidential race

Tuesday, 11 June 2013

Shargh newspaper is reporting that the Hadad Adel’s campaign is claiming that some officials have begun efforts that will result in Saeed Jalili’s withdrawal from the race, and that Jalili has accepted the reasons presented to him by these officials. Representatives of Jalili’s campaign, however, are denying these reports. Sadeq Zibakalem believes that Jalili’s weak showing in the debates have led to a loss of votes and also triggered despair among his extreme supporters. Zibakalem added that in light of the limited time that remains before the elections, the extreme conservative camp has no other option, and they will not support Qalibaf, Velayati, Rezaee or Hadad Adel. Some believe that Jalili’s run as head of the nuclear negotiations team has resulted in disclosure of many nuclear secrets. Jalili, according to him, is a copy of Ahmadinejad, but not a perfect copy. He lacks the charisma and oratory skills Ahmadinejad has, and this was clearly evident during the debates. One of the spokesmen from the Hadad Adel campaign said in an ISNA interview that some of the officials have begun consultations with Jalili about his withdrawal, and Jalili has accepted the reasons that were presented to him. Bagheri, head of Jalili’s campaign, tweeted in response: “Jalili is not going to step down or form a coalition with anyone.”
