GC Spokesman: GC decision to screen Rafsanjani – “legal”

Thursday, 13 June 2013

Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, the Guardian Council’s (GC) Spokesman, has rebuffed Rafsanjani’s claims that an official from the Ministry of Intelligence intervened when the Council screened him from running. Kadkhodaei termed the GC’s decisions on candidates such as Rafsanjani “expert” and “legal,” adding that “The Guardian Council is entitled to ask various bodies and authorities to investigate the eligibility of candidates and ask for the records of the candidates. This is a normal practice for the Guardian Council, and it acts in this manner to collect information through legal channels at all elections.”  Rafsanjani claimed that he was originally approved, but that “a security official attended the Guardian Council meeting and intervened in his qualification” and had an impact on the opinion of Guardian Council members. Kadkhodaei added, “Iran has some of the healthiest and freest elections, and the Iranian people consider it below their dignity to have others observe their elections.”
