First messages of Iranian elections

Monday, 17 June 2013

There is no doubt that the June 14, 2013 elections are an important and historic event in the history of the Iranian people. These elections have many messages and angles, but the most important messages of the elections can be summarized as follows:

  • Diplomacy effectively neutralizes anti-Iranian lobbying in the world – The victory of Rouhani and his unique positions in the nuclear arena and nuclear negotiations can serve as a solution for ending the impasse in the nuclear negotiations, and presenting active diplomacy in the global arena. The West understood from these elections that Iran is an unpredictable country. They formed this impression, among other things, due to the lack of free and full information. One of the most important accomplishments of the rise of the reformists to power in Iran can be a lifting of the neutralization and weakening of extremist groups and anti-Iranian lobbyists in Western countries. In conclusion, Rouhani’s victory is in fact a “win-win” result for all Iranians.
  • Restoring the relationship between the public and the regime – The first message is the high voter turnout, which indicates political maturity of Iranian society. Citizens came out to the polling stations and voted quietly and without emotion for their favorite candidate, despite the air of despair that had affected large portions of society since the 2009 elections. This can help restore the relationship between the public and the regime, and restore citizens’ trust.
  • National unity government to solve the many problems – The election of Rouhani as a moderate figure and supporter of the reformists as well as the fact that he won the majority of the reformist vote as well as a significant percentage of votes in the camp not considered to be politically involved can indicate the establishment of a national unity government that can operate with stability to resolve the problems that have arisen over the past eight years in the economic, political and social arenas.
  • Reformists returned to the arena – The consensus that formed among reformists around Rouhani brought the reformists, who were on the verge of demise, back on the scene. This is a tremendous accomplishment for this political current.
