CBI has not fulfilled its principal duties in the last eight years

Friday, 21 June 2013

Tehran Emrooz ran an editorial by Mohammad-Hossein Mirmohammadi, member of the Majlis Economic Committee, titled, “Where Is the True Place of the Central Bank (CBI)?” Mirmohammadi said that the CBI has not fulfilled its principal duties in the last eight years. “Over the past years, we have witnessed the greater weakening of the Central Bank, which is precisely summarized in this point, that government officials and people working in the economy have brought the Central Bank down from its true place and have minimized its level of importance.” Mirmohammadi underlines that  the CBI is supposed to set the monetary and fiscal policies, but that over the past eight years, “it was not the CBI that set monetary and fiscal policies as a policymaking institution, but rather the cabinet would move forward with its own desired policies, and the Central Bank would follow… In the months and years ahead, the CBI must embrace targeted policies on limiting the rate of inflation, reducing wandering liquidity, having a targeted confrontation with sanctions, and supporting domestic and foreign investments.”
