Khamenei rejects Ahmadinejad’s requests to intervene in elections several times

Monday, 24 June 2013

Hojjatoleslam Abdollah Haji Sadeghi, acting representative of the Supreme Leader in the IRGC, discussed statements made by the Supreme Leader, in which he would not intervene in any way in the approval and disqualification of candidates and would not issue a presidential/ government order (reserved for the Supreme Leader to bypass the decision of any other entity). According to Sadeghi, Ahmadinejad contacted the Supreme Leader three times to issue a presidential order and unsuccessfully negotiated with the Supreme Leader on this matter. The Supreme Leader did not agree to discuss Ahmadinejad’s request to reexamine the decision to disqualify Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei. Mashaei, it should be noted, sent a letter to the Supreme Leader following his disqualification. Sadeghi tried to defend the principlist view and implied in his statement to Ahmadinejad that “the extremism of one person in a government, as senior as he may be, cannot b attributed to all conservatives. We support conservatives who comprise the vision of the Islamic Revolution.” Sadeghi added that the “President Elect faces many domestic and international challenges… We are not interested in his failure… Although we did not vote for him, we congratulate him and wish him success and will work for this success together.”
