The shadowy Fallahian: Intelligence is a soft power

Friday, 12 July 2013

Ali Fallahian always brings up the Ministry of Intelligence he headed for eight years. Those eight years made him very cautious, and he knows exactly what to say and what not to say. Although it has been years since he held that position, he still wants to maintain secrecy. In recent days Fallahian has shown up everywhere Rafsanjani and Rouhani have gone, be it Tehran or Mashhad, Fallahian is there. In a meeting between Rafsanjani and religious scholars in Mashhad, Ali Fallahian was the man closest to intelligence. In an interview with Bahar, Fallahian was asked what he thought the security priority of Rouhani’s government would be. In response, he said that it does not matter what the priorities are, all the priorities are important. The role of the Ministry of Intelligence is prevention or counter-intelligence. Whoever is appointed to the position of Minister of Intelligence must have precise knowledge, analytic thinking and ability to assess the country’s security situation. The Ministry of Intelligence doesn’t work like James Bond, intelligence is a soft, not hard, power. Regarding the disqualification of his candidacy, Fallahian said that he was not disqualified, but his name was placed on a list of those who had withdrawn. “They told me I had withdrawn.”
