Mystery surrounds disappearance of Iranian-born UK citizen in UAE

Wednesday, 14 August 2013

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi said that Iran is investigating the death or disappearance of Iranian-born UK citizen Abbas Yazdanpanah-Yazdi in the United Arab Emirates “Regarding Mr Yazdi, there are some reports that he has been killed or disappeared in the United Arab Emirates. These reports are contradictory and there are ambiguities. We are still looking into dimensions of this and it is not clear for us how things are.” Fars tried to link Minister of Oil candidate Bijan Namdar-Zanganeh to Abbas Yazasanpanah-Yazdi, an alleged associate of Rafsanjani’s son Mehdi Hashemi who faces charges of financial and electoral corruption. Yazdanpanah-Yazdi fled to Britain following his imprisonment in 1993, claiming he had been tortured. A UAE government official has denied claims in a newspaper article that the body of an Iranian-born British national was found in Fujairah. The Times reported that the body of 44-year-old Iranian-born Abbas Yazdanpanah-Yazdi, who disappeared in Dubai on June 25, has been found in Fujairah. The newspaper said “fears are mounting that a British man was kidnapped and killed in the UAE by an Iranian hit squad.”
