Three Rouhani cabinet nominees (education, science, sport) fail to win Majlis confidence

Friday, 16 August 2013

Mohammad Ali Najafi, the candidate nominated for education minister, was attacked for his alleged involvement in the June 2009 presidential election “sedition” and for being a senior adviser to Mehdi Karroubi (currently under house arrest for nearly 1000 days); Jaffar Milimonfared,  who was nominated to be science minister (a sensitive position in charge of the universities) also failed to win Majlis support due to his  close  ties to the to Reformists and his sympathy to student protests .The third rejected candidate was Massoud Soltanifar, nominated to serve as Minister of Youth and Sports. In order for a nominee to be approved, he needs to receive at least half plus one of the 290 (Majlis member) total votes. The three candidates were harshly criticized by the conservative media (“Keyhan”…) since their nomination, which  maintained that they played a leading role in June 2009 “sedition”. Majlis Presidium spokesman Abdolreza Mesri said that Rouhani has three months to propose three ministers to the Majlis to fill the void left in the cabinet.
