New ambassador to IAEA appointed

Friday, 23 August 2013

Reza Najafi, previously head of the Foreign Ministry’s Disarmament Department, was appointed as the new ambassador to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Tasnim news agency reported that in September 2010, when Ali Akbar Salehi was head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), he had issued a decree to replace Soltaniyeh with Reza Najafi, but Manouchehr Motakki, who was Iranian Foreign Minister at the time, annulled the decree. Now, Najafi will be sent to Vienna as Iran’s envoy to the IAEA, while Salehi has also returned to his previous position as the head of AEOI. Salehi was Soltaniyeh’s predecessor as ambassador to IAEA from 1997 to 2005. Soltaniyeh has served as Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA since 2005. The appointment is part of Rouhani extensive reshuffle of Iran’s nuclear negotiators.
