Friday, 30 August 2013

Hassan Rouhani conferred over the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing Iran’s and Russia’s position on Syria. Rouhani said that “Iran is interested in increasing consultations and cooperation between the two countries in various fields, especially regarding the issue of Syria.”  Rouhani said  that an attack against Syria is a source of concern, adding that Syria has a sensitive and strategic position and any military attack against it might cause instability all over the Middle East. According to Interfax News Agency “Given calls to external military intervention in the Syrian conflict the parties stressed the need to search for a settlement solely through political and diplomatic means”. FM Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed the ongoing crisis in Syria with ten of his counterparts from Jordan, Kuwait, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Greece, France, Republic of Azerbaijan and Algeria, reiterating Iran’s declared policy condemning the use of CW and allowing the UN investigators to complete their mission. He also posted lengthy analyses of the situation on his FaceBook page “The recent abhorrent developments in Syria once again highlight the fundamental legal, political and moral question on the utility and effectiveness of the use or threat of force to advance humanitarian causes or even national policies. This has been a constant intellectual and practical concern for me over the past three decades. A few thoughts on the current issue and wider implications”:
