VPN project fails

Thursday, 5 September 2013

Iran’s ”indigenous virtual private network (VPN)” project has been confirmed abandoned one year after the director of the Passive Defense Organization announced its launch. Although the use of illegal VPNs is considered as a criminal offence by judicial authorities and Cyber Police (FATA), there is still “a high percentage of VPN use among internet users in Iran.” The managing director of the Telecommunication Infrastructures Company was recently quoted as announcing the project’s lack of appeal among Iranian users, with “only 30 companies registered to receive legal VPNs.” Unnamed experts noted that “the multi-billion-rial-project” had failed and that “the title of local VPN was only a big technical lie that never even existed.”
