Iranian experts are reporting a new phenomenon in Iranian society. Divorced couples who continue to live together as friends. In a discussion that focused on challenges in marriages of young couples, psychologist Dr. Mehdi Bayati said that continued living together after a divorce is a serious crisis that threatens the principle of life under Islam. He added that one out of every three couples in Iran divorce. Bayati stated that the easy and cheap response to sexual needs of young people is creating a serious crisis in Iranian society. He further states that as long as young people continue to easily satisfy their sexual needs without difficulty, they will have no desire to marry and start a family. Bayati later discussed concerns of officials with regards to the data showing that some of the people contacting dating sites are married and said that the problem is not the easements provide din marriage. A member of the Tehran municipal council reported in the past an increase in the number of men and women living together before marriage, and called this a social disaster with dangerous ramifications. The newest data indicates a significant rise in divorce and a drop in marriages in Iran.
