Khamenei’s Adviser on International Affairs since 1997, Ali Akbar Velayati has been appointed head of the influential think tank Center for Strategic Research. He succeeds elected president Rouhani, who headed the think tank until his presidency in August 2013. Velayati had been Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1981 to 1997. The Center is affiliated with the Expediency Council, currently presided over by Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani.
