Iran trying to placate Messi

Wednesday, 18 December 2013

After thousands of insulting messages sent by Iranian fans to Messi’s Facebook page, Iranian film, television and theater actor Jamshid Mashayekhi will travel to Spain as an ambassador of peace and friendship for the Iranian soccer club Esteghlal. Mashayeki is traveling to placate Barecelona player Lionel Messi and to serve as a cultural ambassador for Iran following thousands of inappropriate and insulting messages posted by Iranian Facebook users on Messi’s official page once they found out that the Iranian team would be forced to play against Argentina and Messi in the home draw. Mashayekhi announced that he would travel to Spain in order to deliver a message of placation from the Iranian people to Messi. The 79-year-old Mashayekhi called “90″, a popular Iranian TV program about football, last week and asked Iranian officials to invite Messi to Iran to mollify him. Last week, Iranian Football Federation (IFF) President Ali Kaffashian also officially apologized to Messi over the FaceBook messages.  Related: Lionel Messi’s Facebook page “swarmed” by offensive comments in Persian
