Zarif posts positive summary of Iran’s successes in Davos on Facebook page

Monday, 27 January 2014

“Saturday afternoon, I wait at Zurich’s airport to fly to Iran via Frankfurt and I have an opportunity to write to you about the president and my visit to Switzerland and the Davos conference. Every year, 2500 important world leaders meet and discuss developments and plan for the future. Every day, hundreds of various meetings were held on such topics as the situation in Syria and latest scientific achievements in children’s education. I participated several times in this conference in the past as Deputy FM, and I had time to participate in several conferences but this year, unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to do so. You can visit the official website weforum.org to learn more about the participants and the programs. If you see that I am extremely young in those pictures, do not be surprised. They have been using the same picture from 18 years ago that they had in their possession. Participation in this conference is by invitation only and for years, the Iranian government was not invited to participate in this important conference. The participation of Dr. Rouhani (Iran’s president) has drawn everyone’s attention, and his participation in one general conference and several meetings on economic and political issues as well as several interviews left a tremendous impression and greatly contributed to a display of a positive Iranian image to influential leaders in the international community. This also neutralized the efforts of our ill-wishers to create a security atmosphere around Iran. I participated in a meeting on the future of the Middle East with the foreign ministers of turkey, Jordan, the Kurdish Autonomy, Chairman of the US Committee on Foreign Relations and former Lebanese politicians, that was broadcast live on Al Arabiya. I was unable to return to Iran along with the president. The Davos Conference is another example of effective, successful and dignified Iranian presence in major decision-making arenas in the world. As one German reporter wrote, the new government has, within six months, done the work of 4 years in foreign policy. On the sidelines of the conference, I held several meetings, in which I came to an agreement with Ms. Ashton that at the end of Bahman (mid-February), the first conference between Iran and the 5+1 would take place.   We wanted this conference to be earlier but due to the Chinese New Year holiday, our Chinese friends could not attend. Beginning tomorrow, we will host several current and former officials in Iran. Former foreign ministers of Russian and France will be arrive in Tehran over the next several days. Italy’s Minister of Culture and the Turkish FM will also arrive in Tehran next week. At the end of the week, I will travel to a security conference in Munich. Following my return, I will host a delegation headed by Kofi Annan that includes prominent anti-apartheid priest Desmond Tutu from South Africa, and former presidents of Finland and  Mexico. I will then host the Swedish FM in Tehran.”
