Mashreq website claims that foreign and anti-revolutionary media are presenting Saeed Jalili as the regime’s candidate and as being close to Khamenei, in order to stir up an anti-Jalili phobia among foreign public opinion and among some of their readers inside Iran. Such media hope to take advantage of the atmosphere created around conservative participants in the race, especially those who in their view represent Iran’s non-compliance with the West (namely Jalili, who heads the negotiating team on nuclear matters), as an opportunity to damage the Islamic Revolution and the Supreme Leader. If Jalili is presented by them as a candidate supported by the Supreme Leader, alongside the blackening of his image by Persian media outside Iran, this will increase the likelihood of Jalili’s failure in the elections, and they would also consider it a failure for the Supreme Leader, Khamenei.
