Verbal sparring between Rouhani and Jalili on nuclear talks with the West continues; Rouhani maintains that negotiations in his time were also conducted with approval of Supreme Leader

Tuesday, 4 June 2013

Rouhani’s election headquarters responded to the comments made by Ali Baqeri, Saeed Jalili’s deputy (Baqeri is also head of Jalili’s election headquarters): Do you, as those currently responsible for the nuclear negotiations, have the authority and approval to make important decisions without consulting and receiving the approval of the Supreme Leader that you are accusing the previous team of doing so? Baqeri is one of the most senior people involved in the nuclear negotiations and his statements were not logical. Some of his remarks implied that the actions of the Supreme National Security Council during Hassan Rouhani’s term were taken without the approval of the Supreme Leader. It should be noted that Jalili and his election headquarters’ team have repeatedly attacked Rouhani, who served as Iran’s nuclear negotiator when Iran agreed to suspend uranium enrichment (2003). This week Iranian television aired a documentary produced by Jalili’s election headquarters, which emphasized Jalili’s central role and achievements as Iran’s nuclear negotiator.
