Ahmadinejad violates election law by expressing support for his close aide Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei

Monday, 25 March 2013

Mohammad Reza Bahonar criticized Ahmadinejad  for “violating” the election law by repeating the controversial “long live spring” slogan, a slogan linked with the President’s close aide, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, who is thought to be the government’s candidate for the upcoming presidential elections (June 14, 2013). Bahonar said, “In the recent Nowruz celebration, Mr. Ahmadinejad called Mashaei ‘a man of spring’ three times, and in his speech on February 10 chanted ‘long live spring’ three times. These are definitely illegal acts and are violations of the election law… The President can have a candidate; there is no problem with that. But the President cannot harness government’s facilities to campaign for him.” Bahonar added, “No matter how many times Ahmadinejad says that he (and his supporters) will not interfere in the elections, it is hard to believe them, because evidence shows otherwise. It is obvious they are behind a specific individual (Mashaei).”
