Nuclear program relies on strong foundation of universities, industry and research centers; 20% uranium enrichment taking place at both Natanz and Fordo; further round of nuclear talks may take place on January 16

Participating in a memorial ceremony for nuclear scientist Ahmadi-Roshan, the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, Fereydoun Abbasi, spoke of Western fears of military goals of Iran’s nuclear program. He said that Iran has no such plans relating to military objectives and that to date, the West has failed to provide any evidence of this. He emphasized that all of Iran’s nuclear activities are performed under the supervision of the IAEA. “We will not accept anything beyond the NPT framework. We will not answer undocumented claims. We will (only) respond to the documents we get from them that we find acceptable.” Asked whether the assassinations of several nuclear scientists had influenced Iran’s nuclear program in any way, Abbasi said that it relies on all the universities and industry and research centers, and is so extensive that it cannot be hurt by physical harm befalling several scientists. He added that new achievements in the nuclear sector would be revealed in the coming year. Abbasi said that Iran continues and will continue to enrich uranium according to its needs, adding that 50% enrichment is being carried out at Natanz as is 20% enrichment, as well as 20% enrichment at Fordo, in accordance with Iran’s plans and needs. He said that based on its long-term programs and interests, Iran will soon decide on the construction of new power plants. He added that the Bushehr power plant will be in full operation within two years. Elsewhere, he referred to the timing of the next round of talks with the IAEA and said that no details have yet been given, but apparently [IAEA Director] Amano’s deputy would be participating in the talks with a team, and they would likely take place on January 16, as previously announced.
