Iranian Ambassador to Damascus: Opening Golan Heights front is high on Syrian government’s agenda

Tuesday, 11 June 2013

Mohammad Reza Rao’uf Sheibani said, “With the Zionist regime’s (Israel) recent operations (two aerial attacks against Syria) and its provocations and support for armed opposition forces in Syria, the Syrian people practically see this truce violated and the opening of the Golan Heights front is high on the Syrian government’s agenda… We will see clear resistance movements in the Golan in the near future.” Sheibani confirmed that Hezbollah fighters were fighting alongside Syrian army forces inside Syria, but said fighters from other countries were also present in the country. He reiterated Iran’s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying Iran could not afford to lose a strategic member of the “axis of resistance… We will not allow plots against a member of the axis of resistance to succeed.” Sheibani said that Iran is playing a major role in regional developments, even if the decision is ultimately made to not participate in the conference. As such, if the West wants the Geneva II conference to succeed, it must take Iran’s position in to account as well as its regional status.
