“The root of all evil”: New government must limit involvement of security forces in economy; IRGC - we are vital for economic progress

Friday, 9 August 2013

Member of Majlis, Ahmad Tavakoli, a blunt critic of Ahmadinejad, has urged the incoming government to resolutely consider the vast presence of military and security forces in Iran’s economy. Tavakoli said that the military has become unfair competition to the private sector and warned that if no decision is made regarding their presence in the economy, eventually they will strive to translate their economic power into political power. He admitted that it will not be simple to extract the security forces from the economy, but it is necessary to redefine their involvement and to completely prevent them from any involvement in the money market and refrain from granting them big economic projects as contractors (referring to Khatam al-Anbia, IRGC’s construction arm). Alef website, affiliated with Tavakoli, referred to the militarization of the economy as “the root of all evil” and quoted Ayatollah Khomeini, who warned against any involvement of the IRGC and Basij in politics. The commentary maintained that the growing involvement of military personnel in economics eventually requires them to mobilize political support that will enable them to gain bigger economic projects and economic benefits and encourage legislation that will help them promote their economic interests. The “security forces” were quick to respond. Seyyed Hassan Firouzabadi said, “There is nothing wrong with armed forces assisting the government in the economic sector” and reiterated the security forces prominent role in rehabilitating Iran after the Iran-Iraq War, especially in construction of dams, factories and other key economic issues. Mohammad-Reza Naghdi , Head of the Basij, said in this regard that “Contrary to what some believe, the economic epic is in the hands of the public, and it is impossible for a government to accomplish this without the creativity of the public.” He called on Rouhani to pay attention to “domestic potentials” while adding, “We must realize the benefits of international sanctions… If a government can identify this potential and bring them to the fore, then the economic epic will be accomplished. And if we appreciate the economic sanctions and make a commitment towards an independent economy, we shall become one of the world’s few advanced countries, because if we set our eyes on outside forces, we will most certainly loose… The progress of science and technology and political power has all improved, while all the elements of American power have declined and today the US is the most disgraced country in the world.” The IRGC’s weekly mouthpiece echoed this message, “Following the announcement of the results of the presidential elections, there was a wave of support for the new President, which was a political epic, which if pursued will result in the largest economic epic… The IRGC is the principal defender of the Islamic Revolution and was first to send its congratulations to the new President… In view of IRGC’s role in many fields, where the government and the public could not participate in the past, it can be said that the (IRGC) force is a powerful arm for the Supreme Leader and can be one for the future administration. Through the Basij’s work, it can eradicate poverty, and through Khatam al-Anbia (construction) base, and others, implement grand projects that have not been implemented by the private sector.” The article praised the Basij and called it “the largest social network in Iran, and perhaps the world, with massive potential of young people that can be used to fulfill the economic epic of the country.”
