Majlis NSFPC passes a bill to bar single women under 40 from leaving Iran without permission from a legal guardian

Thursday, 22 November 2012

Hussein Naghavi-Husseini, Spokesman for the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said that the Majlis was persuaded to consider the government’s proposed bill after hearing reports from experts about problems with the current regulations. The bill proposes that single women up to 40 years of age who want to leave Iran or get a passport must have permission from a parent or legal guardian, and if there are no guardians, they should acquire a permit from the court. Naghavi-Hosseini stressed that the bill has not become law yet. According to current regulations, single women over the age of 18 can leave the country without such restrictions. He added that the new restrictions on women’s rights are being proposed to “protect women’s well-being.” According to Iranian law, married women of any age need permission from their husbands to travel abroad.
